Have you ever wondered where to find free food resources or fresh local products in Red Deer?
The Red Deer Food Map is an easy-to-use, interactive resource designed to connect community members with the many food opportunities available throughout the region. Whether you're looking for affordable meals, community support services, fresh produce from local farms, or ways to support local businesses, the map makes it easy to discover what's available close to home.
There are two maps to explore:
- The Food Security Map – Helping residents locate free food resources, community meals, social service organizations, community orchards, gardens, and other food support services.
- The Local Producer Map – Showcasing local family farms, breweries, farmers' markets, greenhouses, and a wide variety of fresh, locally produced foods.
The idea for the Red Deer Food Map took root in 2024 when the Local Food Movement, a collaborative group of local organizations, farmers, and community members, recognized the need for a centralized resource that highlighted where people could find local food throughout the Red Deer region. With support from a social work student at Red Deer Polytechnic, the group began developing what would become the Red Deer Food Map.
Over several months, members of the project devoted their time to researching local farms, food producers, and community resources. Through a collaborative effort, they carefully refined the map's content and design, creating a tool intended to strengthen the local economy while helping improve food security across the region.
Designed to connect residents with food resources both within the city and in the surrounding area, the map serves a dual purpose. The Food Security Map helps people locate essential services such as food banks, community gardens, and orchards, while the Local Producer Map connects users with local food vendors and producers, including breweries, greenhouses, retail shops, farmers' markets, and other sources of locally grown and produced food.
Focusing on destinations within approximately 30 minutes of Red Deer, the map demonstrates just how many local food options are available nearby. By shopping closer to home, residents can support local farmers, businesses, and the regional economy while potentially reducing transportation costs and saving money on their food purchases.
Most importantly, the Red Deer Food Map is intended to be a living, growing resource. As new businesses, farms, and community resources emerge, the map can continue to evolve. If you notice something missing, community members are encouraged to submit suggestions and help ensure all Red Deer's local food goodness is captured in one convenient place.
